Flavours Just Around the Corner
If you're staying at Ahoy Surf House and looking to explore beyond the beaches and waves, we’ve got the perfect day trip for you: Caldas da Rainha. Just a 20-minute drive from our house, this charming town offers a unique blend of history, art, ceramics, and traditional Portuguese food - a true hidden gem of the Silver Coast.
A Town Born from Hot Springs and Royalty
Caldas da Rainha literally means “The Queen’s Hot Springs” - the town was founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor, who built what is now considered the oldest thermal hospital in the world still in operation.
Here’s what you can’t miss:
Parque D. Carlos I -A peaceful garden perfect for a walk, picnic, or boat ride on the lake.
José Malhoa Museum - Dedicated to one of Portugal’s greatest naturalist painters, it’s located inside the park and worth a visit.
Caldas Arts Center - A modern space for exhibitions, workshops, and contemporary ceramics.
Bordallo Pinheiro Factory & Store - Home to Portugal’s most iconic (and playful) ceramic designs. Great for souvenirs!
Where to Eat: Traditional Portuguese Flavours
Caldas is also known for its generous, delicious cuisine. Whether you're into comfort food or modern twists on local dishes, these places won’t disappoint:
Solar dos Amigos – A must-visit. Perfect for sharing hearty dishes like slow-cooked chicken or roasted piglet.
Tiborna – Small plates, fresh ingredients, and a great wine selection in a cozy setting.
O Selim – A classic local spot for grilled fish and home-style meals.
Pastelaria Machado – Stop here for the famous Cavacas (traditional sweets) and the cheeky Beijinhos pastries — a fun part of the local culture.
A Hub of Creativity and Craftsmanship
Caldas is known as a creative city, thanks to its strong ceramics heritage and art community. Don’t miss the daily Praça da Fruta (Fruit Square), an open-air market selling fresh produce, handmade crafts, and more - right in the heart of town.
The Perfect Half-Day or Full-Day Escape
Whether you’re into culture, history, food, or just want a change of pace from the beach, Caldas da Rainha is a perfect getaway. It's close, authentic, and full of charm.
Ahoy Tip: On your way back, stop by Foz do Arelho Lagoon to catch the sunset - one of the most peaceful and stunning spots on the West Coast
